I use to beat myself up when I would give into food cravings and eat for emotional reasons, I would blame myself and my lack of self-control. Why don’t I have any willpower?!
I now understand that it wasn’t a lack of willpower that was causing emotional eating behaviours.
The reasons for emotional eating behaviours are much more complex.
It is not uncommon to crave foods high in sugar and carbohydrates when you are stressed, anxious or experiencing an uncomfortable emotion. A craving involves several areas of the brain including the reward centre, memories and many hormones & chemicals.
Willpower just can’t compete with powerful systems such as these.
Furthermore, carbohydrates actually help create a concentration of an amino acid called Tryptophan; this is the building block to serotonin (aka the happy hormone).
A rise in cortisol (the stress hormone) may be followed by a strong urge to eat lollies, chocolate, chips or donuts. EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) or Tapping is a powerful strategy that reduces cortisol and in turn can reduce the desire to eat and in turn help you lose weight.
Another wonderful strategy I have found to be extremely helpful when it comes to emotional eating is the practice of mindful eating. Mindful eating is based on the Buddhist concept of mindfulness. It is about focusing your attention, on the act of eating, without any judgement. It brings you into the present moment, helping you to regain control over both food and your feelings.
We have created a Real Food Freedom online programs that uses this incredible technique of tapping to help you make lasting changes to your life. Our program will guide you to overcome emotional eating. We will give you tools so you will be able to experience real food freedom.
PLEASE NOTE: It is also important to remember no matter how powerless you feel over food cravings and emotional eating, there is help out there. I believe the best place to start is always with your Doctor.
